“The size of the UK Biobank data set is huge, occupying 25TB of storage. Previously, it had taken two years to download and verify this data using local on-premises computers. With Oracle's assistance, it only took a week to get these files onto OCI. This improvement in network speed and time to results contributed significantly to the overall success of my research project.”
As part of an effort to understand the relationship between smoking and mental health, researchers at the University of Saskatchewan set out to study how smoking cigarettes specifically affects different mental disorders over the course of a person's lifetime. However, the ability to carry out this research was limited by a lack of computational power to run analyses on the UK Biobank data set, which occupies 25TB of storage. Previously, it took researchers two years to download and verify this data using local on-premises computers. With Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), it took only a week to get these files into the cloud for analysis. This improvement in network speed and time to results significantly contributed to the overall success of the project.
